Announcing The North York Moors National Park Authority as Social Value Pioneers

Posted 3rd June 2019

We are proud to announce that The North York Moors National Park Authority have joined Social Value UK as Social Value Pioneers!

The North York Moors National Park Authority has two statutory puposes;
• To conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the national park and
• To promote the opportuites for understanding an enjoying the special qualities of the national park by the public

Specifically, the Education and Youth Engagement Service seeks to increase awareness, understanding and enjoyment of the Park; to stimulate a change in attitude, to inspire a commitment to make choices that benefit the environment.

Ahead of announcing their joining, we asked them a few questions:

Why do you think social value is important? In your organisation, your industry or in wider society?

National Parks are Britain’s breathing spaces, they offer a vast array of opportunities and benefits for people. We are starting on our journey to capture those benefits which can be difficult to quantify. We want to know how people perceive those benefits and how we can build on them to inform our work in the future.

Does your organisation have a background in social value/social accounting/SROI?

We commissioned a desk bound report to measure the Health and Well-being Impact of the National Park. It focussed on two areas of work, visitors and volunteers.

We are currently undertaking a SROI evaluation of our Young Ranger Scheme and Family Explorer Club. This is to inform our National Lottery Heritage Fund application to extend our work with Young People.

What are your plans for your SVUK membership?

We hope to obtain the Level 1 Social Value Cerificate

Heather McNiff, Head of Education and Youth Engagement said

‘Assessing social value is giving us a deeper understanding of the value of the National Park and how it impacts positively on peoples’ lives. It is an exciting area of work which will help drive our priorities in the future.’
