Hello from the newest member of Social Value UK.
My name is Matthew Mckew and I am the new Social Value UK Advocacy Lead.
I’ve joined Social Value UK because my views align directly with the three pillars of thought here. Businesses can only be sustainable and profitable if we have a planet to live on, a properly paid and respected workforce, and a more equal society.
For too long business and public sector decisions have focused on the short term. The best looking data has won, while engagement with stakeholders has been something of an after-thought or an irrelevance.
But we only build a strong health sector, transport system, business or whatever else, by valuing those we work with and for. Moreover, we need to realise the workforce and customers are not the only ones affected by the changes we make – there is a wider community and environment.
I have worked as a journalist for the last ten years, rising from local print media to international news, freelancing for the American news-giant CNN as a field producer.
I was lucky enough to live in New Zealand for almost three years and I’m keen to see what comes of their government’s move to measuring success more qualitative outcomes than GDP.
In my spare time you can find me bouldering or watching an array of sports, including football, cricket and F1.
