Gender, Inclusion and Impact Management

Background context

The picture of gender equality in the UK in 2018 is mixed. This is a country celebrating 100 years since women were legally allowed to vote, whilst gender pay gap data is being published showing a poor image of organisations in many sectors (for example Higher Education) . Levels of gender based violence in the UK are high.

There is a need for myth busting and public engagement in gender issues. Anecdotally there feels to be a level of inertia, or apathy. There is a view of feminism or gender issues to be not about men, whilst there are issues that disproportionately affect men as well as those that affect women. Many industries are still very divided along gender lines, as are work based hierarchies (construction, medicine, politics, care professions, HR, PR, HE and more). The UK could also learn widely from excellent and innovate work taking place internationally, looking at and learning from the international development sector.

There is a need to recognise the intersectionality of gender with other characteristics that affect people’s lives. Gender is not separate from class, race, sexuality or health and each can affect a person’s daily experience.

Currently, the resources, best practice, and metrics (outcomes frameworks, indicators etc) are inconsistent or lacking outside of academic research making it difficult for new, and established organisations, working in this area to engage with impact management of their activities.

Group Aims

  1. Communications – Recognition that gender matters – work towards a greater understanding cross sector, and publicly that gender matters and plays a role in how we experience our lives every day. A recognition that this is not just about women, and that intersectionality matters.
  2. Learning – Social impact sector has a role to play – cross learning between social impact sector and specialists and gender related project/activities. It is only through measuring and understanding that we can begin to manage this impact.
  3. Principles – Promote a set of Principles that are specific to gender, inclusion and impact management and that reflect an awareness and understanding of existing standards and approaches.

What have we done so far?

  • Gender inequality, power and accountability article. This blog illustrates the huge gender inequality and accountability gaps that exist throughout our society as has been seen in many of the recent sexual abuse scandals across many different sectors and institutions.
  • National Social Value Conference Roundtable. Working group members Antonia Orr, Catherine Manning and Liz Allen hosted a roundtable at the National Social Value Conference 2019 in Manchester on 21 November. The discussion focused on the aims of the group, and the actions that have been taken and are planned for the group.
  • Resource gathering. Working group members are gathering together examples of social impact analysis, or impact management in projects that have a gender focus. The aim is to use this knowledge of what is available to be able to develop and share best practice.

Aims for the coming year

The group are aiming to progress with next actions in line with the 3 core aims in 2019:

Aim 1: Communication – objective to promote and get wider understanding

  • Working group blogs on specific theme or topic related to resources that have been gathered

Aim 2: Learning – what can we learn from wider social sector, including resources and practice?

  • Invite authors of frameworks / approaches to participate in panel/webinar
  • Members to add resources into shared folder and research options to share these openly with wider membership

Aim 3: Principles of good practice – standardise practice and align on what is already taking place

  • WOCAN work on W+ Standard in collaboration with SAN. Explore this model against SVUK standards and our own principles.
  • Links to the collation of resources which can then be used as a communications activity, a learning exercise and look within the expertise of the group to articulate how these have been implemented.

How does the group work?

The group includes members from across Social Value UK and Social Value International. They aim to meet 4 times a year via conference call meeting. The group share work documents through a shared Google Drive, and via email.

The group is co-managed by members Antonia Orr, Liz Allen and Catherine Manning.

Members are actively encouraged to share information, resources, activities or opportunities that could be of interest to the rest of the group
